To find readers and make a name for yourself, you need to put yourself out there. Speaking engagements garner attention for your book and set you apart from the (shy!) pack who aren’t as comfortable in the limelight. The good news is that even if you aren’t a born speaker, you can learn the skills you need to become comfortable on the stage. 1. Remove the woofer from an old speaker. Most speakers can be reverse engineered into DIY mics. The most useful are the woofers (bass speakers) from three-way speaker towers. Modern speakers tend to be smaller, so these big towers are frequently sold cheaply at tag sales or put out by the street for free.

Learn the concepts you need OR choose any of the eleven tested and proven speaker designs included in the book. Features a variety of speaker projects, many of which have been tested by loudspeaker expert, Joseph D’Appolito. Written for beginners who want to build and intermediates who want to improve their speaker design and building skills.   Ask the speaker if he or she has a prepared introduction. If it’s a professional speaker, the answer will almost certainly be yes. Read the written introduction of the professional speaker word for word. It’s likely that the experienced public speaker has crafted that introduction word for word, sentence by sentence.

Patti is also an instructor for SMU Executive Education and a keynote speaker on “Leading Change.” Her first book, Make Waves: Be the One to Start Change at Work & in Life, hit shelves in May. Speaker bookers (often known as Meeting Planners) don't want to hire a speaker "who can talk about anything" they want a subject matter expert. So find a great niche to make your own. Being a successful professional speaker is all about marketing yourself: Good marketing means a clear message powerfully put.
